  • An Internet connection is required to transfer save data.
  • The Save Data Transfer Tool is used to transfer save data; it does not copy save data. Once transferred, the original save data is deleted.
  • Do not turn off the power or remove the Game Card when transferring save data.
  • Depending on the game, extra data may be saved onto an SD Card (StreetPass data, SpotPass data, etc.). If you wish to retain this data, you must transfer save data to the same SD Card.
  • Save data can only be transferred from the retail version of software to the downloadable version. You cannot transfer save data from the downloadable version of software to the retail version and you cannot transfer save data between two copies of the software (retail or downloadable).
  • Any save data already on the downloadable version of the software will be overwritten during the transfer process.
  • System menu version 5.0.0-11E or higher is required to use the Save Data Transfer Tool. If you require assistance updating your system, click here.

How to use the Save Data Transfer Tool

  1. Ensure the SD Card inserted in your Nintendo 3DS system has the downloadable version of the software installed.
  2. Connect to Nintendo eShop and download the Save Data Transfer Tool.
  3. Insert the retail version of the software into your Nintendo 3DS system.
  4. From the Nintendo 3DS HOME Menu, select 'Save Data Transfer Tool'.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully and tap the transfer button when ready to transfer the save data. Do not turn the power off or remove the Nintendo 3DS Game Card during the save data transfer process. This can cause the save data to become corrupt or lost. If the save data is lost during the transfer process, it cannot be recovered.

No word on when NA will receive the Mii Plaza games.

Nintendo has released system software version 6.0 worldwide, giving North American 3DS owners access to save data backup and new features for the 3DS camera app.

The save data backup feature allows users to backup save data for download titles to the SD card. The utility can be found in the System Settings, and allows users to backup one title at a time, for up to 30 titles.

Some of the software that are unable to be backed up:

  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
  • Cubic Ninja
  • Monster Hunter 3G
  • Reel Fishing 3D Paradise
  • Pokemon Rumble Blast
  • Freakyforms Deluxe
  • Pokemon Dream Radar
  • Senran Kagura Burst: Guren no Shoujotachi
  • Sengoku Musou Chronicle 2nd
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf

In addition to these, all ten of the Game Boy Advance Ambassador games are also unable to be backed up.

The camera app now features various filters and manual focus, as well as the ability to manually adjust various settings such as contrast and saturation.

3DS owners in European and Japanese territories have also received additional games and features in the Mii Plaza; check out our coverage here.

Nintendo 3ds Where Is Download Game Saves On Ps4

I do believe that the Mii Plaza additions were cut from the NA build due to bugs currently crashing the Europe and Japan Mii Plazas.

I feel dumb... But can someone explain the backup a little more? Does it do a backup to the cloud (doubt it... But I can dream) Or is it so you can remove the SD card and back it up to your PC from there? (Kinda like the PSP?)

Save data backup is a nifty feature, though I wonder why it doesn't work for some titles...

JabsJune 18, 2013

Trust me you don't want this update yet. It doesn't crash occasionally, its practically guaranteed to crash within a few minutes of being opened, ends up force resetting the entire system.
I can totally see why they would not want to release is in NA just yet.

I'm a bit upset because Animal Crossing is the save I would want to backup the most and it doesn't work.

Of all the ways to update the camera function Nintendo has taken baby steps in a baffling direction. What I really want is a way to share 3D video. If they add that to Swapnote and I would redownload it in a heart beat. Such a great feature silenced and sacked for mediocrity.

Yep, the ONE GAME that would be most important to back up your save data for, and of course you cannot. This has been a recurring theme with almost every Animal Crossing game. Why is Nintendo so concerned with keeping this save data safe and far away from the hands of the player? It was one of the few games where the save data couldn't be transferred between Wii consoles either (I got a new Wii and had to hack it to move the save data over).
If I lost months of Animal Crossing save data, I would be pissed and would probably never play the game again. So of course, I can't back it up. Good fucking job, Nintendo. Thanks for that. Glad to see that the security of this save data is somehow more important than all the progress the players have made in their towns.
