Evinrude serial number chart to check year. I just bought an Evinrude 115 /85 jet and would like to know when it was manufactured. The Model # is 85093d and the serial # is E05625 the power head has supposedly been changed from a 85 to 115. The 85 broke a piston skirt and ruined the block. What year is that old evinrude? Find out here on our model year lookup chart! Models a thru 605.
When you look on the motor mounting bracket of your Evinrude, you find a metallic, embossed tag with the name 'Evinrude' prominently featured, along with a variety of information on your motor and finally, the motor's serial number. The serial number tells you if the motor was built for the American market, the horsepower, the options it's supposed to have, the length of the driveshaft in the lower unit and what year it was made.
Look at the first digit. If it's a letter other than 'J' or 'E,' it's a model variation built for a boat builder to include in a boat 'package.' This also indicates it could be a variation built for a country other than the United States.
Move to the next group of digits a set of two or three numbers that tells you the horsepower.
Examine the next group of two or three letters that identify the trim on the basic motor. Some examples are 'FRE' for Four-stroke Remote Electric-start or 'TE' for Tiller, Electric.
Shift to the next group, a single letter that appears appended to the trim code. If there are only numbers after the three-letter trim code, your motor has a short driveshaft, likely 15 inches in length. If there is a letter: 'L' represents a 17-inch driveshaft; 'Y' stands for a 19-inch driveshaft; 'X' is a 20-inch driveshaft; and 'Z' is a 22-inch driveshaft.
Remember the word 'Introduces.' The next two letters are a simple substitution cipher using that word as its key to identify the year of production. 'I' denotes 1. 'N' equals 2. 'T' stands for 3. 'R' means 4. 'O' stands for 5. 'D' represents 6. 'U' means 7. 'C' stands for 8. 'E' represents 9 and 'S' denotes 0. If that two letter group is 'CE,' it means your motor was built in 1989 since 'C' stands for 8 and 'E' stands for 9.
Tip
- Read the last letter, which is used within the factory to designate the model run, of which there are several yearly. For internal auditing only, this letter has no significance to the consumer or mechanic.

Evinrude Serial Identification
Evinrude has produced outboard motors for small watercraft since 1930. Although Evinrude recommends that you visit your local dealer and have him look up the outboard year of manufacture from the current Evinrude reference manual, there are ways to determine the year on your own. Each Evinrude outboard has an eight or nine character model number composed of letters and numbers located on the motor or the mounting bracket. This code can tell you the model, style, horsepower, shaft length, model run, design features and year of manufacture.
Determine the year of an Evinrude outboard with a nine-character model number by locating the seventh and eighth character of the number. Nine-character model numbers indicate outboards made between 1980 and 1998. The two letters occupying the seventh and eighth spots in the model number indicate the specific year of manufacture. Evinrude's code is such that each letter corresponds to a single digit; I corresponds to 1, N to 2, T to 3, R to 4, O to 5, D to 6, U to 7, C to 8, E to 9 and S to 0. For example, a code containing the letters CE in the seventh and eighth spaces would correspond to a manufacturing year of 1989.
Find the year of manufacture for your Evinrude motor with an eight-character model number by looking for the sixth and seventh character of the number. An eight-character model number indicates an engine made between 1999 and the present. Evinrude corresponds a number with each letter, such that I corresponds to 1, N is 2, T is 3, R is 4, O is 5, D is 6, U is 7, C is 8, E is 9 and S is 0; a code of SS, for example, would indicate an engine made in 2000.
Figure out when Evinrude made your outboard engine with a model number consisting of fewer than eight characters by using online reference materials such as those published by Marine Engine, an authorized Evinrude dealer. Because Envinrude outboards made before 1980 do not have a consistent model number code, reference materials are critical. Online references such as those published by Marine Engine feature a list of motors, categorized by horsepower, model number and year of manufacture.
